For Year 10 Classical Civilisation, you will be taking a module called 'Myth and Religion'. This module is all about the myths and religion of the ancient Greeks and Romans. 

There are 7 different set texts that you will need to know for the module. These are all in the source booklet here.

For your summer work, you must read all 7 of the set texts.

These texts cover a wide range of aspects of myths and religion in the ancient world, so you will learn a lot from them.

Here is a list of the 7 texts, with some notes about what they are:

1.     p.2-10 Ovid Metamorphoses I

This is a poem by a Roman poet called Ovid, and it is all about people and animals who change (they metamorphose) into different things. 

In this part of the text, the hero Hercules fights the god Achelous and the centaur Nessus, and then he dies.

2.     p.11-12 Ovid Metamorphoses II

This is another section from Ovid Metamorphoses, and it is about the famous story of Orpheus and Eurydice.

3.     p.13-17 Virgil Aeneid Book 8

This is an epic poem (a really long and dramatic poem) by the poet Virgil. It is about the hero Aeneas, who travels from the Trojan War to Italy, to create a new city in Italy that is like Troy (because Troy burned down during the Trojan War). 

In this story, Aeneas tells the story of how he fought a terrible monster called Cacus.

4.    p.18 Homeric Hymn to Heracles the Lionhearted

This is a short poem by an unknown poet, about the hero Heracles (the Greek name for Hercules).

5.    p.19-26 Homeric Hymn to Demeter 

This is another poem by an unknown poet, about Persephone (a maiden) who gets stolen by the god of the underworld Hades, and then her mother Demeter goes after her.

6.    p.27- Plutarch Comparison of Theseus and Romulus 

This is a text by the Roman historian Plutarch, about the mythical heroes Theseus and Romulus.

In the text, Plutarch compares Theseus and Romulus.

7.    p.32-38 Livy History of Rome

This text by the Roman historian Livy covers the history of Rome, from the Trojan War up to Romulus and Remus.
